It might have been a little cold outside, but the competition was on fire at the Cuddy Arena on the campus of Wingate University just outside of Monroe, North Carolina. Corey Waiters had around 400 competitors and a large contingency of spectators from Georgia, Virginia, North and South Carolina attending his annual Union County Karate Classic. The tournament was rated 4A by the MATT, SKIL AA. and Dojo AAA and was a great success.

Starting with adult and junior self defense, Cole Hudson slipped by Darius Smalls by one hundredth of a point for the junior divisional win while Steve Rich was first over Linda Austin of Waiters Martial Arts for the adult division.

Cole Hudson edged out everyone in 17 and under traditional weapons. Donald Smalls won the 11 and under open division with Kenneth Arant taking the 12-17 counterpart. Anthony Higgins kept Warren Baldwin, and Derrick Parks from winning the adult traditional win, while Michael Goodwin won the open division.

In junior 10-11 boys open forms Donald Smalls, with a score of 29.94, bested Cole Hudson’s score of 29.93. Shayla Smith took first place honors for the 10-11 girls division, Brett Gibson of Reeds Karate held off Darius Smalls and Kenneth Arant for the 12-14 boys division, while Zack Knotts of Waiters Martial Arts was king of the hill in the 15-17 boys division. Traditional forms winners included: Donald Smalls, Asante’ Lee, Cole Hudson, Shea Tanner, Melissa Everett and Darius Smalls.

Linda Austin was top of her field in the senior female and open female open forms division with musical and men’s open forms going to Michael Goodwin. Derrick Parks had no problem keeping first to himself in the Japanese/Okinawan division while Richard Brown won both the soft and the 42 and over traditional forms divisions.

In point sparring, Matthew Wininger held off Zachery Oxendine 8/7 for the 9 and under division. Tyrone McCoy, a junior at Kenny Morrisons school, squeezed by Bradley Norris 5/4 for the 10-11 boys win with Emmanuel Williams taking third 9/5 over Cole Hudson. Justin Brown keep Wayne Easterling of Team War Angel at bay 4/3 with Brett Gibson of Reed Karate taking third 5/4 over Darius Smalls. Daryl Norman of Ricky Taylor’s school surpassed Dominick Rapuano of Reeds Karate 4/2 with K.C. Farley taking a 2/1 decision over Ian Barrick. Shayla Smith won the 10-11 girls while Kaylee Plunket won the 15-17 girls division.

Men’s fighting divisions had some big divisions. Andrew Wagoner aced super light, Danny Antonio was top of his game for light weight, Juwann White dominated Matthew Daniels 10/2 for the middle weight division with Keith Green taking third. Ryan Freeman held on to win super heavy weight, Ricky Taylor got by Darryl Norman 4/3 for the senior heavy, Joey Shiflett slipped by Larry Dillingham 7/6 with Curtis Price taking third over Richard Brown 6 to 2 for the 42 and over gang which was a large division.

In the junior grand forms, Donald Smalls took all the marbles, while adult grands went to Richard Brown.
Danny Antonio won the sparring grand 6/2 over Jawann White while Joey Shiflett won the senior grand with the same score over Ricky Taylor.
