CONTINUOUS TITLES
Junior Boys’ Team Sparring (N-111)
The first night of competition was packed with competition as junior teams representing every North American country and practically every regional area were in attendance. All said and done, unbelievably the same two teams as last year emerged victorious to vie for the title. While a few members where changed up, Dumlao’s Martial Arts from Rodeo, California and Team VKA from Mexico City were once again pitted against each other. Last year, VKA with two of the same members, Sergio Calva and Tonatiuh Bizarro lost to Dumlao’s who sported three different members by an uneventful 25 to 14 score. Nothing could be termed uneventful this year as the score never varied by more than two points and was generally tied throughout the three matches. In the end VKA got revenge winning by a single point 13 to 12. This was the first time this title was won by a Mexican Team and only the second time won by a team outside the USA since the Canadian Loonies, led by Trevor Nash and Steve Kawamura, won the title in 1996.

Junior Girls’ Team Sparring (N-112)
I didn’t think anyone could top the team record of Karate-do USA who won the junior boys’ team title three year in a row, 1991 to 1993, as well as wining 1st, 2nd and 3rd in 1991, but this year a team with two of the same team members has won an unprecedented four times in a row. Colbey Northcutt and Marissa Mayer individually hold incredible NBL sparring records, but as a duo they’ve nearly topped their individual records. Taking on Sarah Johnson as the youngest team member they trounced Team Kumite 17 to 5 to win their fourth title in a row.

Men’s Team Sparring (N-113)
There was nothing going to be easy about winning the prestigious men’s team title this year. Top eight included Frohm’s Martial Arts, Ocean’s Eleven, Team Proper, No Limit, Castro, Schumann International, VKA and Bay Area’s Best and a host of fighters that looked like a list of the best fighters of the decade. And while the final score appears lopsided the team eliminations were anything but lackluster. It’s hard to picture the action, but with the likes of Willie Hicks, Raymond Daniels and Dandree Walker fighting nearly unseeded through the rounds you can imagine the excitement. In the end Bay Area’s Best (BAB) sponsored by Mike Dobashi and coached by Damon Gilbert won the title over Team GOP. Now BAB has a record of winning men’s teams five times, 1992, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2008 with Daniels being the only player to be on the winning team twice.
