TEAM SPARRING

Junior Boys’ Team Sparring (N-110)
Despite Team GOP’s powerhouse they only held a very slim lead through the Pre-Finale as they took on the FX school team from Ron Ferguson’s Xtreme Martial Arts in Virginia. No single player was a stand-out as scoring went from 2-3 to 6-5 to 9-7 giving GOP the narrow lead in the end and their second boys team title in a row. Taking third was the MVP Team of Colin Navickas, Frankie Fernandez and Matthew Okada who took a heartbreaking one point loss to Team FX in the eliminations.

Junior Girls’ Team Sparring (N-111)
The junior girls team sparring was a blow out as Team GOP’s top guns; three 2006 point sparring world champions, destroyed Team TSS 18 to 6. The score however makes it look more lopesided that the talent actually was as all the TSS members held their own as a whole. This was GOP’s second year win for the junior girls’ team title. The Carolina’s Team SMA, consisting of Chelsea Hoyel, Kaylee Plunkett and Carolyn Bryant, took third.

Men’s Team Sparring (N-112)
With teams fielded by B.O.S.S., JMA, BAB, DDX and Straight-up you know the furs going to fly. Team B.O.S.S. consisting of Eli Quenzel, Ryan Freeman and Jeff Tiller appeared as if they were headed for a stage performance when DDX pulled a last second come from behind victory sending them to the stage against Team Straight-up’s powerhouse. Shane Baker pulled in the most points in any round, but the score was close enough throughout the entire match that the results could have gone either way. In the end Straight-up, coached by Joe Greenhalgh, won this year’s coveted men’s team world title.
