Fishing for ’gators, catching birds with his bare hands and touting armadillos on a leash... sounds more like the adventurous for a wild man of the outback than it does the hobbies of an eleven year old karate kid. While I can’t prove the four foot alligator that Sage Northcutt caught while fishing with his friend Donald Vickers last week, I personally can attest to his attempting to catch birds with his bare hands at the Pacific Jewel Nationals last year, and the armadillo on a leash can be seen on his website sagenorthcutt.com. Sage can be an adventurous little tyke. While many times found reasonably quiet and reserved, when he’s put to the test his competitive drive will lead him into almost any unique situation. He and his sister Colbey, constantly challenge each other, striving to outdo each other. It was his sister’s taking karate lessons that lured him to do the same. While in the ring it’s his opponent that drives him to excel. At home both his sister and father, Mark, challenge his karate skills and he seems to thrive on the constant routine of daily practice that the trio have developed together.
While Sage was initially looked at as a tag-along behind his sister, he’s now risen to his own prominence in the field of karate competition. Easily discernable on the national circuit with his forever broad smile and spiked golden hair he will be found popping from division to division competing in a multitude of events. He travels extensively for karate competition appearing at a variety of national and international competitions. He typically travels several NBL national conferences and some overseas WAKO competition as well. He just returned from the Irish Open where he says that part of the fun was listening to the accents that sound like the stars in his favorite Harry Potter movies.

While he admits to liking sparring best he won his first world title in 2004 in 9 & under creative forms, a division has repeated the win for a record three years. And he’s won a multitude of other forms world titles, including musical, kenpo and traditional weapons. Flips, aerials, kicks and crazy tricks are his favorite aspects of forms competition, but he admits that punching and kicking a live target is his ultimate passion. He’s been involved in Texas kickboxing practically since starting karate at five years old and won his first individual karate world title in point sparring at the 2006 Super Grands World Games. But he’s also racked up team sparring titles as a part of the winning three man team division in both 2005 and 2006. And to top it all off he’s now the youngest player to ever be on the front cover of Sport Karate Magazine.

Win or lose, Sage is a gentleman. Never a whisper of dejection at a loss he just continues on to the next division. In fact I’ve never witnessed him as anything, but complacent. My first interaction with him was in 2004 at the Myrtle Beach Super Grands where each afternoon he offered to help place the feebees in the audience areas for the Finales in the evenings. Attentive, perseverant, polite and responsive, he an entourage he gathered together of several other kids set a tradition of helping out. Just don’t forget if you give Sage a challenge he won’t say no, despite what it is.

Every year he adds new division to his competition repertoire. This year’s new challenge is contemporary weapons. He is learning swordsmanship from his mentor Johnnie Murphy for both musical and creative forms.

He seems to have several goals planned for his future including topping his sister’s two world title lead over him. In fact he says nothing will stop him from obtaining 40 world titles before reaching adult divisions. Lets add this up – 3 years and 9 titles so far. Seven years left as a junior that’s an additional say 20 titles – not quite 40. However if he took 5 per year like last year he’d certainly make it. He guarantees he’ll have 40 when I interview him again for the cover when he’s 17. Well if he’s any where near 40 titles at 17 he’ll make the cover again long before then!

Besides being a martial arts star. He also wants to pursue stardom on the silver screen. He’s already appeared in several commercials producing a five digit income. And if he’s not in Hollywood as a movie star he says he wouldn’t mind being a plastic surgeon for the stars in Beverly Hills. Where do these kids get these ideas from? As he’s presently a straight A student in school he’ll probably obtain any career he sets his mind to after all.

And while he seems to have his future planned out I suspect some new challenge might alter his path. After all he’s Sage the adventurer and challenge is his ultimate passion.
