Competitors from Virginia, Georgia, North and South Carolina arrived January 20 to attend Wayne and Kenny Green’s annual War Angel Martial Science Karate Challenge held at the Mariboro County High School in Bennettsville, South Carolina.

Dean Pyles of Team PVT pleased the crowd with great skill in the adult self defense division while his daughter Alexandra Pyles dazzled the crowd with a comical self defense routine to win the junior underbelt division.
In open weapons, Bradley Norris of Team Academy held everyone at bay for the 11 and under division, Brice Ferguson took all the marbles from Chris Urcinola to win the l2-17 division, while Asante Lee of South Carolina’s Team War Angel held off Bradley Norris and Kaylee Plunkett of Team Rogers TKD for the traditional win. In adult open weapons, Lauren Ferguson of Virginia’s Team FX kept first from Michael Goodwin, while Goodwin was the top finisher over Scan McLean for the senior division.

Norris also topped the 11 and under Japanese/Okinawan forms division. Kaylee Plunkett with a score of 29.91 held off her nearest opponent Asante Lee by two hundredth of a point to win the 12-17 division. Cierra Cargo of Team FX with a score of 29.93 bested Asante Lee’s score of 29.91 to win the 12-17 Korean division. Men’s Korean went to Michael Goodwin. Scan McLean won the senior traditional division, Lauren Ferguson topped Ashley Harrelson of Team Superkicks 29.95 to 29.93 for the female Korean division and was the winner of the Japanese/Okinawan division as well.

In open forms division, Norris took top honors in the 10-11 boys while Brice Ferguson of Team FX aced the 12-17 boys division. Cierra Cargo held on for the win in 12-14 girls, while Chris Urcinola of Team MVKC was best of the best in the 15-17 boys division.

In the point sparring division. Brice Ferguson surpassed Asante Lee 2/0 with Robert Blake taking third in 12-13 boys, John Norton of Team War Angel squeezed by Robert Richards and the rest of the players 5 to 4 for the 14-15 boys win, while Chris Urcinola went on to win the 15-17 boys division. In the girls sparring, Cierra Cargo was the girl you had to get by in the 12-14 division. Ceaira Walker of Kenny Morrison’s school battled Virginia’s Team FX member Gina Hairston 5/4 for the final round in 15-17 girls.

In the adult categories Wayne Green Jr. of Team War Angel and Joey Shiflett won the light and middle weight divisions respectively. Ryan Freeman with a 7/7 tie at end of regulation time, slipped by Kenny Green Jr. in overtime for the heavy weight division, while Daniel Miller held on to win the super heavy weight division.

Joey Shiflett won first in senior light and 50 and over divisions. Gary Kinney of South Carolina’s Superfoot was top of the crop for the senior heavy and the 42-49 division.

Lauren Ferguson snagged the women’s division from Ashley Harrelson 7 to 6 with Rebecca Odom taking third, Julayne Shiflett dominated Becky Odom 6 to 2 for the senior women’s division.

In the forms grand, Kaylee Plunkett was awarded the top honors in junior traditional forms. Brice Ferguson topped junior open forms and Lauren Ferguson won adult open forms.

In the senior sparring grand, Joey Shiflett topped Gary Kinney 8 to 4.
